How to make a Meklink belt last a decade
Full-grain leather is alive. It darkens, softens, and develops a patina that no factory can replicate. The mechanism is sealed and self-lubricating. Almost all of the maintenance is on the strap, and almost all of it is what you do not do.
Weekly
Wipe the strap with a soft, dry cloth. That is enough.
Every three to six months
Rub a thin coat of neutral leather balm into the grain side with your fingers. Wait five minutes. Buff with a clean cloth. This rehydrates the leather and locks the patina in.
Avoid
- Direct sunlight or radiator heat for long periods. Both pull moisture out of the leather and crack it.
- Soaking the strap. Surface moisture is fine; submerging is not. If it gets caught in heavy rain, dry it flat at room temperature, never with a hairdryer.
- Coloured shoe polish. It will stain stitching. Use clear or matched balm only.
Storage
Store the belt rolled — buckle on the inside — in the felt sleeve it shipped in. Folding the strap creases the grain at the bend.
The mechanism
The ratchet is sealed at the factory. No oil, no grease, no spray lubricants. If it ever clicks slower or sticks, email us and we will replace the lock free.
